Fortunately, the man – who was travelling alone at the time – didn’t hit any other vehicles or pedestrians.
He veered off the road and was left dangling centimetres from the sea in Gallipoli, near Lecce southern Italy, at around 11.30am yesterday (6 Jun).
The OAP was left trapped inside the vehicle as onlookers called the emergency services.
A team of police officers, firefighters, paramedics and port workers arrived at the scene to rescue the man and treat him for any injuries.
After being rescued from his crashed car, the man was taken to hospital for medical checks.
It is believed the car had a faulty gearbox at the time of the crash, as reported by Need To Know.
His grandson later said on social media: “My grandfather is fine.
“But he’s still a little scared about what happened.”
