They had been partying at a private residence and had boarded the SUV afterwards to take them home.
The horror reportedly unfolded when the driver got out to look for something.
She had left the vehicle on a slope in neutral without applying the handbrake, according to reports.
A storm was reportedly raging at the time on Saturday (13 Jul) night,, as reported on Need To Know.
The SUV is believed to have rolled down the slope in reverse and into the Calzadas River in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico, with the students trapped inside.
Witnesses looked on in horror as the Chevrolet Suburban slowly sank into the deep water.
