Cops quickly moved in to stop them on Saturday (3 Aug) afternoon.
One shocked onlooker, called Ruby, 22, told Need To Know: “I’d just been to the trans pride parade and they hired out a classroom area in the art gallery to give some talks.
“And that is when we heard everyone coming.
“Pretty much everyone from the trans pride protest had to hide inside the museum.
“There were quite a lot of police horses and a lot of riot police.
“It was quite scary because they were attacking local businesses, chanting things, holding up British flags, arguing with the police.
“I saw a few people getting arrested.
“It was quite shocking that people can be so blatantly racist in the middle of the town centre.”
Other riots took place in nearby Liverpool, Rotherham and Portsmouth.
They were sparked by the murders of three children in Southport.
Greater Manchester Police and Vape Supermarket have been approached for comment.
