Officers decided to intervene but it only escalated the violence.
The scenes of mayhem were filmed as Atlético Mineiro hosted San Lorenzo in the Copa Libertadores on Tuesday (20 Aug).
Those targeted by the police in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, were the Argentine away fans, according to local media.
Reports say the officers shot them with tear gas at “point-blank” range.
The chaos lasted several minutes.
Atlético Mineiro ended up winning the match 1-0, eliminating San Lorenzo from the competition, as reported by Need To Know.
Footie fan Fran wrote on social media: “A blatant red-card foul that wasn’t called, every call going Mineiros way, and San Lorenzo fans facing repression, including tear gas.
“Same old story: an Argentine club goes to Brazil and gets bombarded on and off the field. It’s disgusting, CONMEBOL.”
The latest reports say four San Lorenzo fans were arrested by the Brazilian police.
