Several officials sought refuge in a nearby shop as the angry youths gathered outside to hurl insults at them before leaving.
The filmed scenes took place at the Bodega Aurrerá store in the Mexican capital Mexico City on Tuesday (3 Sept)
The brawl broke out after police officers spotted three youths acting suspiciously at the checkout, according to the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC).
The officers approached the suspected shoplifters to carry out a search in the company of several security guards.
However, the three youths reacted angrily and an altercation quickly followed.
Trouble worsened when a group of eight pals entered the store and joined the fray.
Heavily outnumbered and on the receiving end of a severe beating, the uniformed officials beat a hasty retreat.
Several cops managed to take shelter in a store inside the supermarket.
A SSC spokesperson said the officers sought refuge in the shop to avoid a major confrontation.
They added: “Once the suspects left the area, paramedics assessed the injured officers.”
The SSC confirmed that they are currently reviewing the store’s CCTV cameras to identify the youths involved, as reported by Need To Know.
No arrests have been made yet as the police probe continues.
