An international footballer had his lower leg amputated after being involved in a horror car crash on his way home from a match.

Goalkeeper Cristóbal Campos Véliz is now using a walking frame as part of his recovery.

The 25-year-old’s right leg was amputated below the knee.

The goalie, who plays for the Chilean club San Antonio Unido, was involved in a serious car accident on 2 September.

He overturned in his high-end pickup truck on Route 78 near the Chilean capital Santiago.

His vehicle then slammed into the highway’s central reservation, according to reports.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Sergio Espejo said he may have been speeding at the time of the crash.

The goalie had just played in his club’s home defeat to Trasandino de Los Andes in the country’s second division when disaster struck.

Campos was taken to the Public Assistance Emergency Hospital in Santiago in a non-life-threatening condition.

However, doctors had no choice but to amputate part of the goalkeeper’s smashed right leg.

Campos was transferred to the Santiago Bupa Clinic where he was discharged on 11 October.

However, he had to return the next day due to pain and complications in his meniscus.

His latest post prompted a wave of support from his online followers.

One fan said: “I always thought it was just part of his foot, I was shocked to see how much was amputated.”

Natasha commented: “He is really brave to show us his rehabilitation process, which must be brutal for many people seeing it for the first time.”

Campos went on trial at Sporting Lisbon in 2017 when he was 18 years old, but did not secure a place at the Portuguese club.

He made his professional debut for the Chilean top flight side Universidad de Chile in 2020.

His contract with the club was terminated in December 2023 after he was accused of domestic violence.

He joined the second-tier side San Antonio Unido in March this year, as reported by Need To Know.

He was called up for Chile’s U20 squad for the 2019 South American U-20 Championship but didn’t play a match in the tournament.

He made his full debut for the Chile senior side against Cuba in June 2023.
