After the China Sichuan Airlines flight departed, a power bank which had been taken on malfunctioned.
This resulted in the electrical item exploding, causing heavy clouds of smoke to fill the cabin.
The flight was heading to Xiamen from Chengdu, both in China, on Saturday (Nov 30) evening.
It was forced to make a stop in Guilin, China, after the incident broke out.
The crew on board and the security team responded quickly and were able to get the situation under control.
Nobody was injured thanks to the safety procedures implemented on the journey, as reported by Need To Know.
The plane made a safe landing in Guilin at 6:38pm where passengers were then directed to Xiamen at 9.29pm.
Sichuan Airlines have since released a statement on Chinese platform Weibo.
They wrote: “After the take-off of flight 3U8925 from Chengdu to Xiamen on November 30, smoke appeared on a power bank carried by a cabin passenger.”
“The crew and security team responded quickly and effectively, which did not further affect the safety of cabin facilities and equipment and cabin order.”
It is thought that the cause of the malfunction of the item was due to a change in the air pressure.
During the take-off and landing of an aircraft, the cabin pressure changes.
In this sort of environment, the lithium battery in a power bank will change.
If the power bank is being used at this time, it is easy to cause heat, increase the probability of spontaneous combustion, and endanger flight safety.
