Three illegal e-bikes capable of doing over 30mph have been seized by cops

Officers stopped a rider after spotting him powering through a red light and narrowly missing a member of the public.

While investigating, the officers discovered the reckless rider was using an illegal motor-power pedal bicycle.

A third bike was then confiscated and all the riders of the bikes were uninsured.

They were all seized on Sunday (5 Jan).

In the UK, e-bikes are limited to 15.5mph on public roads and e-bikes that go faster than 28mph are classed as illegal.

Police said that all bikes were illegally modified and were without the correct illuminated lights, as reported by Need To Know.

They were found in Waterloo, central London

A Met Police spokesperson said: “The team are in Waterloo again and had cause to stop this bike after watching the rider go through a red light at a pedestrian crossing narrowly missing members of the public.

“Rider reported for offences and bike seized.

“We have seized the second electric propelled bike of the evening, after it sped through a red traffic light making no attempt to slow or stop and had no lights during hours of darkness.

“And we can call that a hat trick of seizures.

“All illegally modified, none had lights illuminated and all showed no regard for red traffic lights.”

Local Derek Flint said: “This is great work.

Another added: “Great, now you just need to stop all the phone snatchers using them.”

One said: “Can this be done on a constant basis.”
