A speedboat skipper who cut in front of a ferry’s path has been branded “reckless” by a top politician.
The dangerous stunt was filmed and shows how the motorboat hurtled across the sea at a right angle to the ferry, missing the larger vessel’s bow by a whisker.
The clip was shared and denounced by Italian MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli on Sunday (11 May)
The politician wrote: “We’re once again faced with madness at sea – and the summer season hasn’t even started yet.
“I’m calling for the person behind this reckless act to be identified and properly sanctioned, so we can stamp out what risks becoming a trend this season.
“Last year, we saw far too many incidents, often caused by unlicensed individuals or people under the influence of alcohol.
“And then there’s the social media craze – countless videos posted showing minors, even young children, at the controls of boats.”
The near miss happened in the Procida Channel, which separates the island of Procida from the Phlegraean Peninsula, as reported by Need To Know.
Borrelli, 51, went on: “In summer, the Gulf of Naples becomes more crowded than the ring road, with dozens of rental boats that can be operated without a licence.”
The larger vessel seen in the clip is the Caremar Driade ferry, which can carry up to 690 passengers and 45 cars.
The Greens and Left Alliance MP said: “It’s absolutely essential and urgent that we implement a proper sea safety plan to prevent future tragedies.
“The message must be clear: the sea is not a playground.”
