A Brit has been arrested for allegedly attempting to flee cops in a 90mph car chase.

The 45-year-old expat is accused of travelling down the wrong side of the motorway into oncoming traffic after officers tried to stop him at a DUI checkpoint.

The pursuit began at around 1am on Sunday (11 May).

The unnamed man is accused of trying to lose the officers by driving down the wrong side of the N-332 motorway in Benidorm, Spain.

Cops are reported to have pursued him in the correct lane.

The suspect is accused of hitting speeds of 93mph in a reckless bid to escape.

The chase lasted two-and-a-half miles, as reported by Need To Know.

Officers flashed their lights to alert other road users to the oncoming danger during the incident.

There were no accidents.

A police spokesperson said: “He endangered more than 30 vehicles, forcing them to swerve to avoid him.”

Officers eventually managed to force the suspect to stop near a cemetery on the outskirts of the city.

Benidorm Local Police spokesperson Quique Tortosa said it was “the safest place” to perform the chase-ending manoeuvre.

The Brit tested positive for drugs and was also found to be over the drink-drive limit, according to police.

He was handed over to the Civil Guard and was charged with multiple traffic offences.

His arrest comes less than a fortnight after a 49-year-old Brit led police on a high-speed chase lasting 6.2 miles (10km) in another part of Alicante Province.

The drugged-up driver damaged at least 12 vehicles as he drove on the wrong side of several main roads in and around Alcoy, Cocentaina, and Muro.

He allegedly assaulted two Civil Guards when he was finally arrested.
