The six passengers ended up in the water.
Five people made it to shore, but 23-year-old Emerson was unable to save himself.

He reportedly never learned to swim.
His body was removed from the river by locals before being taken to a morgue in the nearby city of São Francisco, northeast of Brasilia, on Saturday (5 Jul).
The victim, full name Emerson Christian Gonçalves Pereira, was the lead singer of the band Cheiro de Pimenta.
The tragedy happened on the São Francisco River.
The group had been doing well in the state of Minas Gerais, and Emerson was touted as a rising star, as reported by Need To Know.
The city council said in a statement: “São Francisco mourns the passing of one of its greatest talents, Emerson Cristian, a young singer with a striking voice and a luminous soul who had his promising career cut short on Saturday morning.
“Mayor Paulo Miguel, together with the Municipal Administration, pays tribute to Emerson and expresses solidarity to his friends, family, and all those who feel this irreparable pain.”
The investigation into the cause of the river accident is ongoing.
