A swimmer swept over 800ft out to sea off the coast of a tourist hotspot was saved by hero rescuers.

The person was found in extremely cold waters and given immediate care.

A report had been made to RNLI workers at 5:32am on Saturday (19 Jul) morning.

The relief D Class Buzz II was launched and a crew rushed to the scene.

The team managed to pull the distressed swimmer from the water during its fifth and most serious call out.

The swimmer was directly opposite the Viking Hotel, South Promenade, Blackpool, when they got into difficulty, as reported by Need To Know.

Upon returning to shore, the casualty was handed over to North West Ambulance Service.

A second report of another swimmer in distress saw the volunteers scramble again, but it turned out to be a false report.

A spokesperson for RNLI Blackpool said: “The most serious came at 5:32am this Saturday morning with the concern for the safety of a person in the sea opposite the Viking Hotel, South Promenade.

“The volunteer crews launched relief D Class Buzz II, making it to the scene and locating the casualty in distress some 250 metres from the shoreline.

“The casualty was recovered to the boat, given immediate casualty care and returned to the boathouse to be handed over to the care of the North West Ambulance Service.

“Whilst this was happening, there came in a report of a second person possibly in the sea around the same location, so the second D class lifeboat Blackpool Endeavour was launched by a second volunteer crew.

“A search was made and an object was found that indicated a false call, but a genuine mistake given the distance from shore.

“Both lifeboats were returned to the lifeboat station, washed down and made ready for the next call.”
