Between June and July George Dunn, 42, broke into five properties stealing items including jewellery, watches, bank cards and even war medals, worth more than £3,000.

Officers investigating the burglaries found DNA evidence and CCTV footage that connected Dunn to the homes.

He left a glove at the scene of one property while traces of his blood was found at others.

While detectives were carrying out their enquiries, Dunn was seriously injured after crashing his car into a wall and then a fence in the early hours of 20 July.

He was disqualified from driving at the time and had no insurance.

Despite being in a life-threatening condition, Dunn still made attempts to flee the scene as officers arrived to provide assistance.

He was eventually removed from the vehicle by fire crews before being taken to a hospital by paramedics, as reported by Need To Know.

Before he was in a medically fit state to be interviewed about the collision, Dunn discharged himself from hospital on 1 September.

A month later, he burgled a sixth home but was spotted by a neighbour falling out of a window.

Officers were able to track him down and Dunn, of Quarry Road, Maidstone, Kent was arrested on 15 October and charged with six counts of burglary and multiple traffic offences.

He pleaded guilty to all the offences at Maidstone Crown Court and was sentenced at the same court on 23 December.

A further eight burglaries were also taken into consideration.

After sentencing Kent Police Detective Inspector Lisa Featherstone said: “Dunn is a prolific offender who was determined to continue committing these invasive crimes.

“Not even a life changing injury deterred him, and he discharged himself from hospital to not only try and evade the consequences of his actions but to continue offending.

“This was a lengthy investigation and officers worked hard to link Dunn to multiple burglaries and driving offences across the county.

“I’d like to thank the victims for their continued support throughout and hope they find some comfort in knowing Dunn has been locked up for these crimes.”
