A doctor has revealed there’s a simple way to avoid hair loss during winter – and anyone can do it.
Hair loss or breakage is more common in winter, mostly due to the cold and dry air, as well as a lack of vitamin D, which is vital for hair follicle health, and even hormonal shifts.
Dr Neena Chandrasekaran, a medic who specialises in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, often shares videos to help educate her 151,000 followers on TikTok, under the series name ‘Things they don’t tell you’.

One video from the 35-year-old proved popular online as she shared that doing one simple thing can prevent hair loss.
“It is now the wintertime, so this is important to know, especially for those who live in the cold up north,” Neena, from Florida, US, told Need To Know.

“Walking outside without covering your head, whether it’s a hat or your jacket hat covering this can lead to hair breakage, baldness and overall hair damage.
“It’s a myth that wearing a hat can cause baldness; however, wearing a hat can protect your hair from becoming bad.”
The doctor explained just how the cold weather conditions can impact your hair.
She added: “The cold air outside, the dry heating inside can remove the moisture from your hair and your scalp, making it more brittle.
“Brittle hair is more prone to breakage, and a lack of moisture can result in split ends.
“Cold temperatures can constrict blood vessels, specifically within the scalp, and can reduce the blood flow to the scalp, causing shedding.”
To avoid shedding their locks this winter, the doctor encourages people to simply add a hat to their outerwear this winter – as well as using hydrating products when it comes to washing your hair.
Neena added: “Wearing a hat is the simplest way to protect your hair from the cold environment and help lock in the moisture.
“Using hydrating shampoos and leave-in conditioners are also important to help your hair stay moisturised.”
