A historic castle has collapsed in front of a group of stunned tourists.
One of the fortress’ four main towers collapsed on Saturday morning (14 Mar).
It sent large chunks of stone crashing into the courtyard in front of shocked onlookers.
Several parked cars were damaged by the tumbling debris, but no one was reported as injured.
The collapse took place at Escalona Castle, a historic 15th-century fortress and palace located in Toledo, Spain.
Built by Don Álvaro de Luna, Constable of Castile, in the 15th century, it was considered a strategic site during the Reconquista and later Castilian conflicts.
The fortress is located on a plateau overlooking the Alberche River.
Following the structural collapse, Civil Guard officers and Town Hall officials arrived to remove debris from the public road.
The authorities cordoned off the area while experts evaluate the extent of the damage.
All planned tourist activities have been suspended pending the review.
Preliminary assessments suggested that recent heavy rainfall in the area may have worsened existing structural weaknesses.
The medieval castle is considered one of the most important in central Spain.
It was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in February 1922.
Escalona Castle was acquired by the municipality in 2024 after remaining in private hands for several centuries, as reported by Need To Know.
It opened its doors to the public on 26 April last year, quickly becoming one of the area’s most popular tourist attractions.
