A 22-year-old medical student was allegedly stabbed to death by her ex-boyfriend with a pair of nail scissors.

Julia Vitoria Sobierai Cardoso was found dead in her flat on Friday (24 Apr) by her flatmate, who raised the alarm.

A post-mortem examination confirmed she had been stabbed 67 times.

The attack is believed to have taken place around five to six hours before her body was discovered.

Forensic experts said 60 of Julia’s wounds were caused by cuticle scissors, with the remainder inflicted by a knife.

Two of the knife wounds were to her neck, while other injuries in the same area suggest she was also strangled.

Both weapons were recovered at the crime scene in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, as reported by Need To Know.

The main suspect, Vitor Rangel Aguiar, is on the run and may have fled back to his native Brazil.

The 27-year-old, Julia’s ex-boyfriend and also a medical student, has been charged in absentia with her murder.

Originally from Chapecó, Brazil, Julia had lived for many years in Navegantes with her family.

Since 2025, she had been living in Paraguay, where she was studying medicine at the Universidad de la Integración de las Américas.

Her friend Sara Cazarotto told local media she had dreamed of becoming a paediatrician since her teenage years.

Sara said: “She was very hardworking and studious – it was her dream to make that promise come true.

“She loved children. She always wanted to build her own family and one day become a mother, and he took all of that away from her.”

Julia and Vitor had split four months before the killing.

Prosecutor Osvaldo Zaracho said: “This man probably hadn’t accepted the end of the relationship and had been trying to get closer to her again as a friend.

“On Friday, he went to the apartment where she lived, supposedly to talk.”

Julia was laid to rest in Navegantes on Monday (27 Apr).

An international arrest warrant has been requested.
