A tourist has been fined €500 for taking a swim in the Trevi Fountain.

The footage, captioned “If you’re afraid of dying, don’t be born”, shows the fully-clothed woman splashing around in the water in broad daylight.

She had taken off her trainers and carried out the stunt in front of hundreds of visitors earlier this week while her husband filmed the scene on his phone.

When confronted by security staff and police, she reportedly tried to justify her actions by saying the sweltering heat had driven her to do it.

The Italian capital has seen average highs of above 30°C (86°F) in recent days.

The woman, variously reported to be a Colombian or Paraguayan named Jenifer, was escorted out of the area.

According to some reports, she was issued a €500 (£433) fine.

However, other accounts say she made a swift getaway before the penalty could be formally imposed.

Before taking a dip, she had jokingly dipped a bank card into the fountain water, as reported by Need To Know.

Earlier this year, in February, local authorities began charging non-residents €2 (£1.73) to approach the fountain and throw coins into the water.

According to superstition, anyone who does so is destined to return to Rome in the future.

Local authorities are now reportedly considering banning Jenifer from the 18th-century monument for life.

One viewer commented: “It’s the first time you’ve left your village, right?”

Another remarked: “Clearly money doesn’t buy class.”

A third added: “Whatever the fine was, it isn’t big enough.”

And a fourth joked: “That’s right, babe – don’t let anyone humiliate you, you can do it on your own.”
