A two-year-old bridge collapsed into a river, leaving four people injured, two of them seriously.

CCTV footage shows the structure giving way at one point before collapsing further in two additional sections seconds later.

Dust was thrown into the air as the concrete overpass crumbled and fell into the river below.

The Frei Paolino Baldassari Bridge in Sena Madureira, in Brazil’s Acre state, collapsed on Friday (5 Jun).

Those injured were taken to a local hospital with the help of residents, firefighters and paramedics.

Three of them have since been transferred to Rio Branco.

Retired judge Ednaldo Muniz dos Santos was on site live-streaming and complaining about structural problems just minutes before the collapse.

The 54-year-old suffered a traumatic brain injury, internal abdominal and kidney trauma, and a pelvic fracture.

He remains in intensive care in Rio Branco following surgery. His condition is critical and he is on mechanical ventilation.

Antônio Morais Lima Filho suffered traumatic injuries while returning home from work.

The 36-year-old was taken to A&E with dilated pupils and is awaiting surgery for a femur fracture.

The 51-year-old was also transferred to Rio Branco and is in stable condition awaiting surgery.

Weverton Murieta, meanwhile, was also returning home from work when he suffered abrasions and minor injuries.

The 34-year-old was discharged from hospital on Saturday (6 Jun).

The bridge had been closed on Thursday (4 Jun) due to concerns over its structural safety after cracks were seen and filmed.

It had been inaugurated just 2.5 years ago at a cost of more than 36m BRL (£5.2m).

The 232m crossing, which carried two lanes of traffic and pedestrian walkways on both sides, took nearly two years to build.

An estimated 60% of the structure collapsed in the incident, as reported by Need To Know.

Authorities say those injured were on site despite restrictions.

Residents in central Sena Madureira reported hearing a loud bang at the moment of the collapse.

Raynery Santos da Cunha was shopping at a nearby pharmacy at the time.

The 39-year-old said: “I heard a really loud noise – it even sounded like an earthquake.

“Shortly afterwards, people started saying the bridge had collapsed, so I ran to the scene and even started a livestream to show what had happened.

“I saw the Military Police and firefighters arrive, and they quickly cordoned off the area.”

The Acre state government is investigating the cause of the collapse.
