A hiker plunged to his death moments after posing for a photo on top of a towering rock viewpoint.

Caio Rocha Aguiar Arrabal lost his footing while trying to climb down from the summit as a horrified companion filmed the descent.

The woman can be heard warning the 44-year-old to be careful before screaming seconds later as he fell into the void below.

The tragedy happened on Sunday morning at the top of the Pedra do Macaco trail in Maricá, Brazil.

Caio had climbed onto the rock to take a photograph from the popular viewpoint, which stands around 150m above the ground, as reported by Need To Know.

He was part of a team leading a hiking group from Araruama, although it was his first time on that particular route.

Caio did not yet hold a formal guide’s licence and was accompanying the group to familiarise himself with the trail.

Emergency crews launched a rescue operation at 11.40am, but the challenging terrain made access difficult.

The operation lasted around four hours, with helicopter support called in to assist rescuers.

By the time crews reached Caio, he had died from his injuries.

Matheus Moura of the Maricá Civil Defence told local media: “It was a very complex, very difficult rescue.

“We had to go in through a densely wooded area with extremely difficult access to reach him.

“We had to climb, ascend using ropes and carry out several procedures before getting to the site.

“I was able to recover the body together with the helicopter crew.”

The Pedra do Macaco trail stretches for around 700m and reaches an altitude of approximately 230m.

While the route is generally considered straightforward, the final climb to the summit requires mountaineering experience and specialist skills.

Visitors regularly climb onto the exposed rock at the top to take photographs, and the viewpoint has been the scene of previous accidents.

According to Moura, Caio attempted to descend from the wrong side of the rock before the fatal fall.
