Young Brits are being offered free meningitis B vaccinations under a new NHS catch-up programme.

Around one million young people are expected to qualify, including Year 13 pupils and under-25s preparing to enter university or residential further education for the first time this autumn.

Appointments are available at participating pharmacies across England, including ASDA, giving students time to receive both required doses before term begins.

Two doses are required at least four weeks apart, as reported by Need To Know.

Eligible 17 and 18-year-olds can book through the NHS National Booking Service, while other qualifying under-25s can contact a participating pharmacy directly.

MenB is a bacterial infection that can cause meningitis and sepsis, potentially resulting in brain damage, hearing loss, amputations or death.

The bacteria can spread through close contact including kissing, sharing drinks or vapes and living in shared accommodation.

First-year university students have around seven times the risk of MenB disease compared with people of a similar age who do not attend university.

The rollout follows an increase in clusters this year, including an outbreak in Kent which claimed two lives.

NHS director of vaccination Caroline Temmink said: “Heading off to university is an exciting time, but it’s also when the risk of MenB disease is higher as you spend lots of time with new people in shared living spaces.

“So, before you pack your bags, take a few minutes to get your meningitis jab.

“We’ve seen the tragic consequences of MenB earlier this year, so if you’re eligible, don’t leave it to chance – get vaccinated.”

Asda has also launched a separate offer for people who do not qualify for the NHS programme.

Customers purchasing a private MenB vaccination at an ASDA Pharmacy between July 20 and August 31 will receive £5 in their Asda Rewards Cashpot.

Symptoms of meningitis can include fever, vomiting, a severe headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to light, drowsiness, seizures and a rash that does not fade under a glass.

Not everyone develops every symptom or a rash. Anyone suspecting meningitis or sepsis should call 999 or go immediately to A&E.
