A seven-year-old boy drowned in a swimming pool at a water park while his pregnant mother went to the toilet.

According to witnesses, Bryan Henrique de Souza de Barros was found unconscious in the pool and pulled from the water by a female visitor.

A firefighter working at the water park then administered first aid before Bryan was taken to an urgent care unit, where he later died.

The tragedy unfolded at Olinda Via Park in Olinda, Brazil, on Saturday (25 July) afternoon, as reported by Need To Know.

According to his family, the pool appeared to be shallow but reached depths of more than 1.6m (5ft 3in) in places.

They alleged there were no signs indicating the pool’s depth or restricting access by children.

Bryan’s great-uncle, police commissioner José da Silva, told local media the boy’s parents and grandparents “are too distraught to speak at the moment.

“But we’ll investigate, because someone was negligent.”

The drowning happened while Bryan’s mother, Emilly, who is nine weeks pregnant with her second child, had gone to the toilet.

“He was a happy, lively little boy. He loved playing with all of us,” José said. “We were a very close family.”

In a statement, Olinda Via Park said it had suspended operations indefinitely.

It said it remained in contact with Bryan’s family to offer support and assistance and was fully cooperating with the authorities investigating the incident.

Bryan was laid to rest at Santo Amaro Cemetery in Recife yesterday (26 July).

José added: “My family is devastated, but I’m going to investigate so we can get some answers, because this can’t just be left like this.”
