Idiot Bank Holiday tourists were slammed after getting stranded on a rock in the sea as the tide came in.

Five people became stranded after being cut off by the tide.

It happened at Chapel Rock, Marazion, Cornwall, on Sunday.

Chapel Rock is a rocky outcrop off the coast at Marazion which becomes surrounded by water as the tide comes in, as reported by Need To Know.

The rock is a popular spot for visitors but can become cut off from the shore, leaving anyone who remains there facing a potentially dangerous return as the water rises.

A witness said: “Idiots decided to stay on Chapel Rock, Marazion, despite the tide coming in, putting their own lives and the lives of the rescue teams at risk.

“The RNLI and Cornwall Coastguard were then forced to rescue all five people from the rock, wasting valuable emergency resources.

“Completely reckless and avoidable.”

The Penzance Coastguard Rescue Team was tasked at 4.33pm after receiving reports of people cut off by the tide.

A spokesperson said the team quickly arrived at the scene and could see the five people on the rock, along with a lifeguard who was talking to them.

With the sea conditions deteriorating, Penlee lifeboat and Coastguard helicopter Rescue 924 arrived.

The lifeboat crew prepared and launched its Y-boat, but Rescue 924 assessed the situation from above and decided a winch rescue would be the safest option.

All five people were then winched up to the helicopter.

Coastguards prepared a helicopter landing site on Folly Field, clearing the play park and seafront to allow the helicopter to land.

Once the winching operation was complete, Rescue 924 landed on the field and transferred the five people to waiting Coastguards, who dispensed safety advice.

The Coastguard team thanked Penlee lifeboat, Rescue 924, Marazion lifeguards and members of the public who quickly moved clear of the seafront and play park to allow the helicopter to land.

A Penlee Lifeboat spokesperson said: “‘Ivan Ellen’ was re-tasked while en route upon receiving a report of another five persons cut off by the tide at Chapel Rock.

“Upon arrival they launched the Y-boat but the Coastguard Helicopter became the safest option of extraction.

“The helicopter winched the five persons and transferred them to Coastguard teams on shore.”
