A British woman has died after becoming unresponsive while descending Mount Snowdon.

Sophie Goodyer-Bird, 35, became increasingly tired as she made her way down Wales’ highest mountain.

Near the end of the walk, she collapsed and became unresponsive.

Emergency services were called and attempted CPR, but she could not be revived.

An inquest has heard that a provisional cause of death was exertional heatstroke.

Sophie, a beauty worker from Birmingham, had been climbing Yr Wyddfa – also known as Snowdon – just days after her 35th birthday.

Her death has now been formally recorded at an inquest opening at Caernarfon Coroners’ Court.

Coroner Kate Robertson heard that Sophie died shortly after becoming unresponsive on the mountain.

The inquest has since been adjourned, with a full hearing to take place at a later date.

Following her death, a fundraiser was launched to help support her 12-year-old son.

The tragic incident happened on July 10.

Yr Wyddfa stands at more than 3,000ft and is climbed by more than 600,000 people each year.

The Eryri National Park Authority warns that the mountain should not be taken lightly, with weather conditions capable of changing rapidly.

It advises walkers to carry enough food and drink, particularly in warmer weather.
