A legendary French singer who played with Iggy Pop has died from ‘fast-acting cancer’ aged 68.
Catherine Ringer, singer, songwriter and co-founder of the beloved duo Les Rita Mitsouko has sadly passed away.
Her career, which began in the 70s, saw her perform with global names such as Iggy Pop, The Smiths and ex-Red Hot Chilli Pepper guitarist John Frusciante.

Legendary French singer Catherine Ringer, who performed with Iggy Pop and co-founded Les Rita Mitsouko, has died aged 68 from a “fast-acting cancer”, her three children have confirmed..
She leaves behind three children, Simone Ringer, Ginger Romàn and Raoul Chichin who confirmed the devastating news.
Speaking to Agence France-Presse her kids revealed her death was due to a ‘fast-acting cancer’.
The heartbreaking statement reads: “It is with immense sadness that the family and loved ones of Catherine Ringer announce her death, taken by a fast-acting cancer in the night of September the 14th, 2026.
“A major French artist and one half of Les Rita Mitsouko, Catherine Ringer left her mark on several generations with her voice and songs, her immense freedom, and her uniqueness.”
In 1979, Ringer met guitarist Frédéric Chichin – the duo instantly hit it off leading to the formation of Les Rita Mitsouko.
The duo boast classics such as Marcia Baïla, Andy, Les Histoires d’A, and C’est comme ça which shot them to fame in the 1980s.
The pair had three children together and were lovers until Chicin’s untimely death at age 53, on 28 Nov 2007.
He died from heart failure caused by a sudden, aggressive case of liver cancer.
Ringer went on performing the groups music and released four albums whilst touring extensively.
Her final appearance on the stage came at the Centre Culturel Charlie Chaplin in Vaulx-en-Velin, France on 19 Mar.
