Passengers leapt down emergency slides after a plane was forced back with one engine shut down.

Three people suffered scrapes as they evacuated the aircraft.

The rest of those on board got off safely and there was no fire or smoke on the aircraft.

The drama unfolded at Naha Airport in Okinawa, Japan, on Wednesday night (23 Sep).

The Nippon Airways flight 1502, a Boeing 737-800, had taken off for Saga with 152 passengers and six crew, including four infants.

The jet was operated by group airline ANA Wings.

About 20 minutes after departure, a warning showed the right engine oil was running hot.

The jet also began to vibrate.

A passenger from Fukuoka said: “I heard a loud boom in the air.”

The cabin crew shut the right engine down and turned back.

They landed shortly after 10pm and stopped on a north taxiway.

Everyone then left by the evacuation slides.

ANA said the three injuries were minor and nobody required an ambulance.

A man in his 30s said: “I was worried we might crash, but I’m glad we survived.”

Another passenger said: “I thought of my child’s life and I tensed up.”

“The child kept crying and saying they were scared.”

A crew member told firefighters: “There was a little vibration in the aircraft.”

ANA said: “We offer our deepest apologies for the concern and inconvenience caused to the passengers aboard this flight and to all those affected.”

The airport in Fukuoka shuts to arrivals at 10pm.The original Naha to Fukuoka flight was running late, so ANA cancelled it and put passengers on a stand-in service to nearby Saga instead.

A relief flight to Fukuoka ran the next morning.

Japan’s transport ministry has classed the case as a serious incident.

Investigator Makoto Senoo explained it was because the slides were used.

His team arrived on Friday to take the flight data and cockpit voice recorders, as reported by Need To Know.

The airline is still looking into the exact cause.
