A tense stand-off between anti-migrant protesters and police took place outside the station where Danny Tommo is being held.
Hundreds of masked supporters dressed in black rushed to the aid of the 37-year-old after his arrest.
The anti-migrant activist has been charged with criminal damage after footage exposed him slashing a dinghy in the channel.

On Thursday (24 Sep) evening the crowd gathered outside Basingstoke Police Station, as reported by Need To Know.
The group, who reportedly left the area peacefully, chanted the words ‘free DT’ outside the station.
The demonstration lasted around three hours with the supporters gathering at 6:30pm and leaving around 9:45pm.
Danny Tommo has also been charged with failing to disclose the PIN to his phone according to Hampshire Police.
The activist remains in custody and is due to appear at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court via videolink today (25 Sep).
The arrest was made following a boat carrying an emergency responder on board was damaged in the Channel.
The footage was allegedly live streamed by Tommo himself.
According to reports, a French coastguard official was on board when the activist appeared to slash at the vessel.
Footage of the protest meeting at a local retail park has racked up over 100,000 views.
The group started here before marching towards the police station.
