The shocking scenes unfolded at a square popular with people exercising in Guatemala City at around 8 pm on Friday (2 October).
According to local reports, a white eucalyptus tree approximately 22 metres tall and estimated to be more than 60 years old collapsed onto the class, leaving at least 17 people injured.
Volunteer firefighters and municipal staff were dispatched to the scene, as reported by Need To Know.
According to their reports, 13 people were taken to different medical centres with bumps, possible fractures and other injuries.
Others required treatment after suffering panic attacks.
Because of the tree’s size, Guatemala City Municipality had to deploy crews to remove the scattered debris and clear the area.
Firefighters used chainsaws and other equipment to clear the space.
Officers also attended the scene to manage traffic, resulting in diversions in the area.
Authorities are now looking into what caused the tree to fall.
Local reports have suggested weather conditions or the condition of the tree itself may have contributed to the collapse.
Locals have since called for large trees in public spaces to be inspected more regularly.
