A stuntman was rushed to hospital after a hard landing while being fired from a catapult over a big top.

Footage shows crowds of spectators watching and filming on their phones as he was launched over the Megatent.

He spun through the air as he cleared the structure’s two peaks, prompting cheers from the crowd.

The huge inflatable airbag on the other side rippled as he slammed into it at around 9pm yesterday (16 July).

Jim van Nes reached speeds of around 185 km/h (115 mph) as he was launched 35m (115ft) into the air at the Zwarte Cross festival in Lichtenvoorde, the Netherlands.

After travelling around 75m (82 yards), emergency responders rushed into the area almost immediately after he landed.

The organisers then announced over the loudspeakers that he was conscious and responsive, but was being checked by medical staff as a precaution.

According to witnesses, he was stretchered into an ambulance and taken away from the festival grounds.

Jim had practised the stunt three times after the catapult was tested using a dummy, as reported by Need To Know.

According to festival organisers, the stunt went exactly as planned from a technical perspective, but the hard landing prompted the medical check.

They said in a statement: “Jim is already making jokes again and will stay another night in hospital just to be on the safe side.”

The stuntman himself told local media: “The launch went well, and flying through the air went well too.

“The only thing was that I went slightly further than the previous time I did it, and I wasn’t prepared for that.”

Jim believes he may have landed with his head hitting his knee, although he doesn’t remember exactly what happened.

“I woke up in an ambulance,” he revealed, adding that his night in hospital was basically a check-up “so they could rule everything out”.

The stunt was due to be performed seven times in total during the festival, which runs until Sunday, but Jim is now unsure whether it will go ahead.

He said: “I would really like to do it one more time because then I know I’ve done it properly again.

“But I think it would be wiser for me to wait and see and perhaps not do it.”
