A woman displaying no symptoms suddenly died on the school run when her heart stopped – and it was linked to a hidden condition that doctors often miss in women.

From the moment they laid eyes on each other, Carrie and Brad Pierce knew they’d be together until they were old and grey.

That was, until, the mum-of-three collapsed while on the school run.

And, by the time he reached his wife, she had already gone.

At just 36 years old, the former McDonald’s manager passed away from a condition that often goes undetected in women – just like in her case.

“I thought Carrie was just stressed when I got the call to say she’d collapsed,” Brad, an online manager from Rochford, told Need To Know.

“When the medics told me her heart had stopped, I was speechless.

“I sat with her, feeling numb.

“Then, they called time.

“How could she have gone?

“How could she leave our kids without a mum and me without my wife?

“I knew it wasn’t her fault – but none of it made sense.”

Carrie and Brad fell in love at just 17 years old.

A few weeks into their relationship, her dad suddenly passed away from an unexplained dissected aortic aneurysm – when a weak spot in the main artery tears – in his 40s.

Working through the grief together, they formed an unbreakable bond and soon went on to tie the knot, as well as welcome their kids, Olivia, 14, Archie, 10 and Noah, six.

Sadly, their youngest then began struggling with his hearing and constant ear infections.

He was also displaying signs of a protruding chest and long limbs.

Carrie fought tooth and nail for answers, and eventually Noah was diagnosed with Marfan Syndrome in October 2025.

It’s a genetic disorder that affects the body’s connective tissue that supports and shapes the structure of organs.

The pair recognised the name instantly, as it’s exactly what the coroner found her dad had – and was the cause of his death.

While women are also carriers of the gene, they are often misdiagnosed – or not until later on in life – due to symptoms presenting as mild or overlapping with other conditions, such as eczema and asthma.

Growing up, only Carrie’s brother was tested, as their mum was allegedly told it could only be passed on to boys.

But after Noah’s diagnosis, doctors suggested she undergo screening.

This was put on hold, however, due to other appointments relating to her youngest’s condition.

If she had had the heart screening, however, her diagnosis of the condition would’ve been found, too.

And it’s likely potentially life-saving surgery would’ve gone ahead.

However, four months passed – and this is when Carrie sadly met her demise.

Brad, aged 37, said: “Noah went back to school and had an inset day.

“So after dropping off Archie, Carrie took him home.

“Just before noon, my phone rang at work and it was Carrie’s mum saying I had to rush home.

“When I pulled up, there were two ambulances and police cars, too.”

After 40 minutes of trying to restart her heart, she died on 5 January 2026.

Three weeks later, a postmortem confirmed the cause of her sudden death – a dissected aortic aneurysm initially thought to be triggered by Marfan Syndrome.

After genetic testing, though, it was found that she and Noah were actually carriers of Loeys-Dietz Syndrome, a mutation of Marfan Syndrome.

Brad said: “I felt cheated.

“If she’d known as a teen that Marfan – or its mutations – could be passed onto girls, there could have been screening or even surgery.

“Something could have been done.

“And if she hadn’t postponed her scan, maybe she would still be here.

“But thoughts like this won’t bring her back to us.”

More answers emerged, including from little Noah, who said, at just age five, he phoned 999 and then ran outside to flag down a passerby.

They had been playing Paw Patrol just beforehand when Carrie stopped responding.

Brad added: “Our relationship was a fairytale romance.

“She was my best friend and soulmate.

“Talking about her in the past tense still doesn’t make sense.

“But I’m doing all I can to use Carrie’s story to help raise awareness about cardiac screenings.

“While only Noah has the condition, all three of our kids have regular screenings – especially as she had no symptoms.

“I’m barely holding it together, but I’m doing everything I can to stay strong for our kids, and for Carrie.”
