Sixteen injured workers were transported to Douala General Hospital in Douala, Cameroon, where they were treated for severe burns.
Some of the victims are reportedly in serious condition, as reported by Need To Know.
Local governor, Samuel Dieudonné Ivaha Diboua, warned the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue.
The explosion rocked Metafrique Steel, a manufacturing plant based in the country’s largest city.
Months ago, another fire devastated the facility, leaving 10 people injured and shutting down production until stronger safety measures could be implemented.
Diboua has called for the company to be shut down, accusing it of failing to implement the previous measures.
“We truly believe it would be appropriate for this company to shut down,” he said.
