A bungling council left locals restless because they didn’t have a ladder tall enough to turn off an alarm.

The noisy din was caused by the siren at the town hall.

Penpushers were forced to get an engineer from 241 miles (387 km) away to turn it off.

But the engineers had to travel from Swansea, South Wales to the Cornwall town, near Falmouth.

It took him over FOUR HOURS to get there by road.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service is a five minute drive away.

A Penryn Town Council spokesperson said: “We are aware that the alarm on the Town Hall is going off.

“Unfortunately we do not have a ladder big enough to reach to reset the alarm.

“Therefore we have to wait for the engineer who is currently in Swansea and we are not able to use a local company.

“Apologies for the obvious inconvenience this is causing.”

There are over a dozen tool hire companies in Penryn.

The alarm is believed to have been turned off just before midnight.

Fuming locals slammed the council.

Andrew Lancaster said: “Is okay though as the cost of the call out will come from our council tax?

“Common sense doesn’t seem to exist anymore.”

Dave Jeff Squires said: “Outsourcing is working well there.”

Daniel Sampson joked: “Welcome to 2023.”

Angela Finbow added: “Kafka or Monty Python?”

Ross Rosewarne said: “Your own fault really, you should be using a local company.”

John O’Regan advised: “Ring the fire brigade, they may have a ladder.”

Chris Knuckey added: “Should use local businesses.”

Penryn Town Council has been contacted for further comment.
