The newborn was transferred to UC Christus Hospital in the country’s capital Santiago where he passed away on 7 February.

He had been undergoing treatment for gestational diabetes at the hospital since early January.

An official for the council of Curanilahue confirmed Raymond’s death on Thursday afternoon.

The statement said he was disconnected “from all life support” on Wednesday afternoon.

The spokesperson said: “Newborn Raymond Contreras was admitted to the UC Christus Clinical Hospital in a serious condition on 4 January.

“For 18 days he was connected to a special support called ECMO, better known as artificial lung, a therapy that allows the lung to rest while cardiovascular function stabilises.

“Unfortunately, Raymond had very serious underlying pathologies such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition that makes the heart muscle thicker than normal, and heart failure, which means his heart had difficulty pumping blood efficiently.

“At the same time, he faced severe lung damage, as well as liver and kidney failure, and problems with his blood clotting.”

Despite doing everything they could to treat Raymond, the “Neonatal Intensive Care Unit medical team determined the irreversibility of his condition”.

The statement continued: “Understanding this, we spoke with his parents about the seriousness of his condition and together it was determined to proceed to disconnect him from all life support on the afternoon of Wednesday 7 February.”

The spokesperson added: “With a lot of love and respect, they were offered the opportunity to hold Raymond in their arms and allow his sister to say goodbye.”

Raymond’s funeral will be held at 4pm today (9 February).
