A fire captain deployed to Ground Zero on 9/11 has died after being trapped underneath a boat during a rafting trip.

Michael Harp, 54, was on a private permitted trip on the Green River in Dinosaur National Monument in Utah, US, when the tragedy unfolded.

Harp, a Sandy, Utah native, became stuck underneath the raft around 4pm local time on 27 June, according to officials.

The boat was “pinned on a rock in the rapid named Hells Half Mile”.

A group of people were eventually able to shift the boat, but the victim – who had lost his lifejacket – was unresponsive and then “drifted downriver”.

The body was recovered by guides the next morning approximately 10 miles downstream from the Location of the accident, reports Need To Know.

He was transported to the Moffat Country coroner by a helicopter.

Harp was a member of the Salt Lake City Fire Department and was deployed to Ground Zero in the wake of the September 11 attacks.

A spokesperson for the department said: “It is with heavy hearts that Salt Lake City Fire Department share the unexpected passing of Captain Michael Harp.

Captain Harp was a 27-year veteran of Salt Lake City Fire Department.

“He was a second generation firefighter, following the footsteps of his father who also served with Salt Lake City Fire Department.

“Captain Harp was also a dedicated member of Utah Task Force 1 and notably deployed to Ground Zero on 9/11.

“Captain Michael Harp dedicated his life to the service of not only the citizens of Salt Lake City, but also his fellow firefighters.

“His legacy of service, leadership, compassion, and contagious laughter will forever be remembered by all who knew him.”
