Residents of a popular beach town have fumed as an ‘ignorant‘ BBQer started a blaze after dumping a disposable grill in a plastic bin.

Video footage highlights the moment the bin was engulfed in flames at Polzeath Beach car park, Cornwall, at around 10:45pm on Tuesday (July 30).

The CCTV shows brave locals rushing to douse the fire by throwing buckets of water and sand over it.

Fire crews arrived at the scene and used a hose reel jet to extinguish the blaze, as reported by Need To Know.

They claimed it had been caused by an ‘ignorant’ BBQer incorrectly disposing of a single-use BBQ.

Furious locals blasted the “ignorant, lazy” culprit and said they’d like to see disposable BBQs banned.

Margaret Valencia de Valence wrote: “Just ban them.”

Sue Flitter posted: “Same old problem. Ignorant, lazy people.”

Jay Jephcote said: “Incorrectly placed my ass.”

Patricia Merricks commented: “Ban the portable BBQs. Will people never learn?”

Linda Jayne added: “Or better still don’t use them. Terrible things that not only cause fires they injure and burn if buried in sand. Terrible for the environment too.”

Sam Yelland asked: “Jesus Christ. How do people remember to breathe.”

Charlie Heyes remarked: “Oh my god. So lucky the Beach Box didn’t catch fire. It is shocking how some people get through life.”

The fire service in Cornwall have issued a warning about disposing of single use BBQS.

In a post shared on Facebook, Wadebridge Community Fire Station wrote: “At 22:45 last night, a crew were mobilised to reports of a bin on fire at Polzeath Beach Car Park. The cause was found to be an incorrectly disposed single-use barbecue.

“If you are using a disposable barbecue, we urge you to do so safely.

“Never leave unattended, let the BBQ cool completely, preferably using water or sand before moving it, dispose of it responsibly in the bins provided or take it home with you and never bury a BBQ in the sand.

“Or just remember to cool it, clear it, bin it.”

Polzeath Beach Ranger Service also shared the video and thanked the fire service. They wrote: “Cooking food on a hot BBQ and then popping said BBQ in the bin.

“How do these people even function in everyday life?

“Amazing bravery from witnesses filling traffic cones and buckets with water.

“And a huge thank you for the dedication and commitment of Wadebridge Community Fire Station for their service.

“Disposable BBQs aren’t banned (yet), but we don’t like them.

“Please dispose of them safely before someone gets hurt.
