With Christmas just around the corner, people are already dreaming about mulled wine, mince pies and the big Turkey dinner.

But if you fancy something different this year, there’s a new offering on the festive menu… in the form of Neapolitan pizza.

Pizza Pilgrims has launched a special dish to celebrate Babbo Natale –who also goes by Santa Claus or Father Christmas.

Sticking to festive colours, the pizza, dubbed ‘It’s a Wonderful Slice’ features a white Fior di Latte and parmesan base, topped with mortadella, green pistachio cream, some extra crushed pistachios thrown in for good measure.

It is topped with your very own snowball: a big white ball of burrata.

And of course, it’s not a real Christmas without Terry’s chocolate orange.

The chefs have combined the British classic sweet treat with the Italian Tiramisu, creating the aptly-named, Terrymisu.

Brands often try to muscle in on the Christmas action by offering one-off dishes or menus to entice customers.

Some are great, while others, like the Walkers Brussels sprouts crisps… are not.

So, where does the Pizza Pilgrim ‘Xmas spesh’ fall?

To save you from potential disappointment, we took it upon ourselves to try the merry meal and find out if it’s really all that.

And truth be told, we’re on the fence.

Let’s start with the positives.

The relatively-new Euston branch, which we visited, is very fun. The quirky interior of bizarre sun lounger umbrella lamps, random hats and red and green checkered table cloths put you in a good mood instantly.

Our server, Martina, was also a gem from the word go – sharing her own favourites from the menu and treating us to a bag of Fonzies (Italy’s far superior version of Cheetos).

Aside from the Christmas specials, we also order the eight cheese pizza, a side of garlic bread, the ‘Schiaffo’ pickled cucumber salad and the garlic and herb crust dipper.

Pizza Pilgrims has incredible dough. It is fluffy with a thin base, yet doesn’t fall apart under the ingredients – a solid 9/10.

We also love any place that has an entire section on the menu dedicated to dips to dip your crust in.

As for the so-called wonderful slice, the first taste was nice.

Unsurprisingly, the mortadella – which often contains pistachio – works quite well with the sauce.

But by slice three, it all felt a bit heavy. It eventually turned into ‘A Very Confusing Flavour Slice’.

The eight cheese pizza was a similar experience, the first few bites were lovely but by the fourth slice we kind of regretted not ordering at least one ‘regular’ dish, like a Margherita.

Funnily enough, the big hitter for us was actually the garlic bread, which had just the right amount of crunch.

Dessert was fault-free – we would like the recipe to make this at home, please.

Word of warning: We were absolutely stuffed by the end, so you must come hungry or risk wasting the precious dough (and you don’t want to be that person).

As a whole, the meal was enjoyable and we’d absolutely return.

But… we’ll probably try a classic pizza next time.
