A teenager has been accused of dumping her newborn baby in a bin after shocking CCTV emerged online.

A refuse worker found the infant, who was born prematurely at 32 weeks, while collecting trash on his route.

The dustman heard the little tot’s cries and immediately called the police on the morning of 7 December.

A police car arrived on the scene within a few minutes and the baby was taken to the El Tintal Paediatric Hospital in the Colombian capital of Bogotá.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Leonardo Bernal said: “A citizen reported the abandonment of a newborn in a dumpster in a residential complex.

“As a result, a security patrol arrived promptly and transferred the minor to a health centre to provide her with all the necessary medical attention.”

After reviewing the building’s CCTV cameras, the authorities identified the infant’s mother as a 17-year-old girl.

Images show the teen approaching the bin with a small bundle in her arms at 5.29am.

Seconds later, she calmly leaves the collection point.

After the baby was rescued, the suspect was located and taken to hospital for medical checks.

The young mother, who originally comes from the northern department of Bolívar, lives alone in the capital city.

The Bogotá Health Department reported that the baby was born prematurely at 32 weeks, and weighed only 3.3 lbs, as reported by Need To Know.

They said the newborn apparently has a delay in her development and is undergoing treatment with antibiotics to prevent possible infections, due to the precarious condition in which she was found.

The police are trying to establish the circumstances leading up to the alleged crime.

The investigation continues.
