A council is hiring a lollipop lady or man for £15 an hour… but some over 70s are banned from applying.

The successful applicant for the role – called a Relief School Warden – will help pupils cross the road on the way to and from class.

They will stand in the street with a trademark ‘Stop’ lollipop.

Despite the fair pay and decent morning and afternoon hours there is one catch.

If job hopefuls haven’t worked in the public sector before they cannot apply if they are 70 or over.

It is being advertised by Cork County Council, in the city, Ireland

The listing reads: “The school traffic warden’s role is to ensure that primary-school children cross public roads safely on their way to and from school.

“The Gardaí and school traffic wardens are the only officials in Ireland who have the authority to stop other vehicles on public roads.”

Duties include maintaining control over the children who are waiting to cross and wearing the correct uniform, “exercising a duty of care” whilst abiding by the Irish council’s health and safety management system.

Applicants must also be “of good character”, be in sufficient health and have a “good general education of a sufficient standard” that will help them to “understand fully and carry out the duties of the post.”

However, it also adds: “Age restrictions shall only apply to a candidate where he/she is not classified as a new entrant within the meaning of the Public Services Superannuation Act, 2004.
