The council confirmed the cause of the blaze, which was a broken electric bike and a number of batteries.

It happened on the Bancroft Estate in Bethnal Green, east London.

Locals slammed what triggered the fire.

Rob Marshall said: “I’ve yet to see the benefit of electric bikes and most seem to be owned by morons.”

Greg Hall simply said: “Green energy.”

Carl Wallis said: “I hope the staff are ok and the vehicle isn’t damaged.

“Who puts an electric bike or batteries in a recycle bin – they’re not recyclable.

“Big thank you to the London Fire Brigade for preventing an explosion in such a small street.”

A Tower Hamlets spokesperson said the lorry was forced to dump two tonnes of waste onto the road.

They also revealed the fire was caused by batteries igniting.

They said: “A waste vehicle had to empty two tonnes of recycling on Bancroft Estate in Bethnal Green due to a fire in the vehicle.

“The cause of the fire was a broken electric bike with multiple batteries.

“Thank you to the fire services who attended to put the fire out.

“We’re asking all residents to please dispose of waste properly.

“Fires caused by hazardous waste including lighter fluid and batteries are extremely dangerous and put our staff at risk.

“All hazardous substances must be collected by a specialist service.”

It happened on Monday (3 Mar), as reported by Need To Know.

London Fire Brigade has been approached for comment.
