Six square miles of countryside have been turned into a massive inferno.

Firefighters have been battling the blaze that swept across a wilderness.

The fire, fanned by winds and dry weather, engulfed a huge swathe of countryside.

Emergency crews battled it for hours.

The inferno erupted in the Carrbridge and Dava area of the Highlands on Saturday.

The blaze, whipped up by strong winds and dry weather, stretched several miles in places.

It was still well alight on Sunday (29 Jun), as reported by Need To Know.

The cause was unknown, but firefighters issued a warning.

An Aviemore Community Fire Station spokesperson said: “Over the weekend, Aviemore firefighters have been working tirelessly with other SFRS crews and estate workers to control multiple large fires across the area.

“Our resources are stretched, and conditions remain extremely dangerous.

“We urgently ask the public not to light any fires, including campfires, disposable barbecues or rubbish fires.

“Even small fires can spread quickly and put lives, the environment, wildlife, property and our crews at risk.

“Help us protect our community and don’t light a fire.”

A few hours later, they added: “We’re still here.

“Just a quick update from the front line, we’re still out here, doing everything we can to protect the land, homes, and wildlife from these relentless wildfires.

“As you can see, the damage is devastating.

“This is exactly why we keep asking – no campfires, no disposable barbecues, no careless smoking.

“Every small act of carelessness can lead to scenes like this, and it’s happening far too often.

“Huge respect to everyone on the ground, especially the crews from Nairn Fire Station and beyond who continue to put themselves in harm’s way to get this under control.

“If you see anything concerning, call 999 immediately.

“Let’s not make a hard job even harder.

“Stay safe – and please, be responsible.”

The Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team, posting on their Facebook page on Sunday night, spoke of their “deep gratitude” for those fighting the flames.

A spokesperson said: “With wildfires currently affecting our area, we want to express our deep gratitude to all emergency services and estate workers who are working tirelessly to extinguish the fires and keep our communities safe.

We also wish to clarify that the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team has not been training or operational in the affected area in recent times, and these wildfires are not connected to any of our activities.

“Our thoughts are with everyone impacted, and we hope for the safety of all those involved in tackling this challenging situation.”
