A hapless dog has been rescued after she plunged off a famous TV show cliff.

Coastguard teams received reports of a fall near a holiday park on Saturday (19 Jul) evening.

Crews from Lyme Regis, West Bay and Beer scrambled to the scene at Highlands End Holiday Park in Bridport, Dorset.

The area was used as a location for the hit TV series Broadchurch, starring David Tennant and Olivia Coleman, as reported by Need To Know.

But after three hours, rescuers had to stand down due to poor weather.

And the poor pooch, called Poppy, had to spend the night sitting tight at the bottom of the cliff.

She was reunited with her owners the following morning after rescue efforts resumed.

A Lyme Regis Coastguard Rescue Team spokesperson said: “Initial efforts involved establishing two cliff rescue rigs and deploying two rope technicians to locate the animal, which could be heard but remained out of sight.

“After a three-hour search, the operation was suspended due to deteriorating weather conditions.

“It resumed on Sunday at 5:45am, once it was confirmed no access to the dog was viable from the beach.

“A rope rescue rig was established and a single technician was deployed to the identified location.

“The Patterdale-type dog named Poppy was successfully retrieved after a brief chase in the undergrowth.

“With the promises of treats she was secured within a rescue bag and safely recovered to the cliff top where she was reunited with her owners.

“The efficient and coordinated efforts of all teams involved were instrumental in the successful outcome of this challenging rescue.

“People are urged to keep dogs on leads whilst on the coast path and with any emergency on the coast call 999 and ask for the coastguard.”

Locals loved the rescue effort.

Donald Mack said: “Well done all involved, great job.”
