A dog left with a broken skull after her owner battered her with a hammer has found a new home.

Adorable Bella is finally being treated in the loving way she deserves after a kind stranger rescued her and found her a forever family.

The brindle Staffordshire bull terrier-cross was rushed for life-saving treatment after being found in horrendous living conditions.

The poor pup was subject to vile attacks by her previous owner, who used to lock her in a tiny cage.

After being taken into care, Bella has now found a loving home where she lives with Carol Wood, 60, and her 22-year-old son Chris.

“My son wanted a pet and we knew about Bella’s rescue and her new owner suggested we could take her on as we would have more time to dedicate to caring for her,” Carol, who works with dementia patients for the NHS, told Need To Know.

“We brought her home in June, and she was a bit nervous at first, but she settled very quickly.

“Now she loves cuddles and will often sleep on one of our beds – one of us usually wakes up with a dead arm or leg.”

While living with her abuser, Bella suffered a broken skull, broken ribs and was left severely underweight.

Bella was eventually rescued by a kind stranger who bought the dog off the abuser and rushed her to urgent veterinary attention.

X-rays taken at the RSPCA’s Newbrook Animal Hospital in Birmingham brought attention to the injuries, which prompted an investigation.

Karl Marston, deputy chief inspector for the RSPCA, interviewed the owner before the case went to court.

The man pleaded guilty to three offences under the Animal Welfare Act.

Karl said: “Bella was in a terrible state when she was rescued, and I dread to think what would have happened without her rescuer’s interventions – it was a really selfless act to rush her for treatment, and I am so grateful to him.

“The new owner who rescued her gave Bella to a family friend who was looking for a dog, and he knew she would have more time to offer Bella the love and care she needed.

“I am delighted to say she now has a fabulous life and is enjoying lots of love and attention.”

The RSPCA is now running the Summer Cruelty Campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the amazing work conducted by staff and volunteers.
