A hunt has been launched for crossbow-wielding fiends after sheep were hit with huge arrows.

Two sheep fell victim to the bizarre attack, with one horrified owner discovering their animals’ injuries.

Arrows fired from a crossbow were found sticking out of members of a flock.

Injuries caused by the dart-sized bolts, which pierced the skin of the defenceless animals, left them distressed.

The arrows have now been removed from the sheep, who are now fortunately recovering well.

The attack took place in the Daw Lane area of Wadworth, Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

Crossbows are still legal in England, Scotland and Wales, with rules falling under the Crossbows Act 1987.

Owners of the weapon are not required to register it or obtain a license.

However, it is illegal to shoot one in a public space or any private place without permission.

Under 18s are forbidden from owning or purchasing one, under 21s cannot fire unless supervised by an elder, and owners cannot rent or lend the weapon to others.

Officers who attended the scene have now launched a hunt for the crossbow-wielding attacker.

The shooting is believed to have taken place overnight between (22 Jul – 23 Jul), as reported by Need To Know.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police stated: “We’re asking for anyone with information following two sheep being injured with a crossbow to come forward and assist us with our investigation.

“We want to hear from anyone who may have witnessed suspicious behaviour or have information that can help us find those responsible.”

Locals were left disgusted by the attack.

Ben Meakin said, “The fact these still aren’t licensed similarly to a firearm is frightening.

“A crossbow bolt has close-quarters effectiveness and penetrating power similar to a 9mm.”

Susan Millwood said, “If found, they need a taste of their own medicine.”

Joanna Kerry added: “What sick people there are.”

John Heath said, “There must be DNA on that arrow.”
