Cannabis worth over £13.9m was found hidden in shipment of melons by cops.

Police have seized the 9.3 tonnes of the drug after the refrigerated lorry they were in was stopped.

The truck was being escorted by two scout cars.

It was stopped on the outskirts of Málaga, Spain.

It had arrived earlier that day from Morocco via the Tangier–Algeciras ferry.

Inside, officers discovered 242 bales containing 9,300 kg (1,464 st) of hashish concealed among the melons.

Six men, aged between 27 and 35, were arrested and remanded in custody.

Spain’s Central Narcotics Brigade said the street value of the seized drugs exceeds £13.9m (€16m).

A source told local media: “When dealing with such large volumes, hidden compartments in walls or floors are no longer feasible.

“The goods are loaded directly into the vehicle and concealed beneath a layer of legitimate cargo.”

The bust took place on 10 September, with details revealed in Madrid yesterday (30 Sept).

Police had been tracking the vehicle for weeks in coordination with Moroccan authorities before intercepting it, as reported by Need To Know.

Days later, officers followed a van loaded with furniture from Tangier to an industrial estate in Málaga.

Inside, they found 1,825 kg (287 st) of hashish hidden in bed bases, wardrobes, and false floors, along with over €14,000 (£12,200) in cash.

Four suspects were arrested and remanded in custody, bringing the total arrests to 10.

Investigators believe both shipments were part of the same international distribution route, with France as a likely final destination.

The investigation is ongoing, and further arrests are expected, local media report.
