An angry divorcee has been jailed for 12 years after setting fire to a packed tube carriage during rush hour.

The 67-year-old man, named only as Won, started the terrifying blaze while 480 commuters were trapped onboard.

The court also handed him a three-year probation period but rejected calls for him to wear an electronic tag for 10 years.

Prosecutors said the act was “tantamount to terrorism”.

Won is said to have been furious after losing a divorce lawsuit, which left him with an unfavourable split of assets.

In a shocking act of revenge, he allegedly planned the attack on a Seoul subway train at 8:42am on 31 May.

The incident happened on the Seoul Metropolitan Subway’s Line 5, between Yeouinaru and Mapo stations in South Korea.

Investigators said he even scouted several tube stations the day before the attack.

CCTV footage released by prosecutors showed a man in a white baseball cap and dark blue top pouring liquid on the carriage floor.

Moments later, he was seen kneeling down to ignite it — sending flames and thick black smoke billowing through the train.

Panic erupted as terrified commuters stampeded into other carriages to escape the blaze.

The suspect fled the scene but was later arrested at Yeouinaru Station.

More than 100 people needed first aid, while six victims were taken to hospital with injuries.

Another 23 passengers, including Won himself, were treated for smoke inhalation, as reported by Need To Know.

Won was charged with attempted murder, arson of a moving train causing injury, and violation of the Railway Safety Act.

The 15th Division of the Seoul Southern District Court handed down the sentence on Tuesday (14 Oct).

The judge said: “The defendant poured gasoline into a subway train carrying approximately 480 passengers and terrorised them due to personal grievances over the outcome of a divorce lawsuit.

“He meticulously planned the crime by scouting the location in advance and preparing his affairs.

“The crime was committed while the train was passing through an underwater tunnel, preventing passengers from escaping, making the nature of the offense severe and deserving of criticism.”

Prosecutors had called for a 20-year jail term, plus three years’ probation and a decade of electronic monitoring.

After hearing the verdict, Won – dressed in a prisoner’s uniform – reportedly nodded and bowed to the bench before being led away.
