Waitrose has been slammed for selling peeled garlic with it branded “lazy” and a waste of plastic packaging.
The posh supermarket giant charges customers £1.20 for them.
It is nearly double the cost of buying a whole one which are just 65p.
These products are packaged as ‘cooks ingredients’ and come in large plastic tubs.
Shoppers have slammed it.
Sarah Duggers fumed: “Stop this.”
Chris Wright said “Plastic containers as well.”
Another added: “Handy but so lazy.
“I bought this tub of peeled garlic as it was reduced and about the same cost of a bulb of garlic.
“Whilst it was handy, I also found it very lazy and wouldn’t be prepared to pay full price.
“Plastic packaging too.”
A third, named Marty, agreed, adding: “I’m not a big believer of government interference.
“But they need to push supermarkets to massively reduce plastic packaging.
“We also need a much better system for recycling soft plastics.
“Consumers also need to consider more when they can.”
Antares Rouge said “Why can’t they put them in glass jars?
“I buy my garlic ready peeled, in oil in a glass jar.
“I keep them in the fridge and they last for months and months.
“Absolutely no need for the plastic.”
Another said: “Very handy if you are in a rush but they don’t store very well.
“Must be used within two to three days and I can’t use that amount of garlic over a couple of days.
“Bought them about three times but will go back to fresh, as a bit expensive to use once or twice in one week.”
However, others were quick to point out this would be more accessible for cooks with disabilities.
Natalie Dawn defended Waitrose, saying: “God forbid they make things easier for disabled people.”
Labour MP Ashley Dalton, for West Lancashire, said “I used to hate this stuff.
“But then someone pointed out that it’s actually really helpful for people with arthritis, neuropathy of the fingers, loss of fine motor skills for any reason etc.”
Fred Allen added “I am disabled and terrible with my hands.
“I buy this lazy garlic and chopped garlic all the time so for me it’s perfect.”
A Waitrose spokesperson said: “Our peeled garlic is popular with our customers, who find it easy and convenient to use.
“It’s packaged to protect its longevity and reduces food waste, and the packaging is both made with recycled materials and is fully recyclable.”
