A medical student has been charged with murder after stabbing his mum more than 70 times.

The attacker, named Emmanuel “Manny” Espinoza, confessed to killing the victim, Elvia, after driving back home from college to visit her.

The 46-year-old had reportedly not seen her son in a while.

But he was due to come home on Saturday (6 April 2024) as he had an event to attend in the area.

Espinoza, 21, was spotted on doorcam footage arriving at the home, located in Polk County, Florida, US, around 2pm holding a knife in his hand, Need To Know reports.

The fourth-year University of Florida student later called 911 himself to confess to the attack.

Sheriff, Grady Judd said the case was “one of the most bizarre murders that we’ve dealt with in a very long time”.

He added: “It is incomprehensible as to what happened that day.”

According to local reports, Espinoza, who planned to become a doctor, noticed he had cut his hand during the stabbing and went to ask his mum for Neosporin – but then realised she was dead.

He claims that he consumed no drugs or alcohol prior to the attack and has no history of mental illness.

The suspect’s reasons for the stabbing were that “he had just been angry” and hadn’t “liked’ his mum “for years”.

The valedictorian added: “I wanted to do this for some time, but I didn’t have the nerve to do it, so I just made up my mind that today was the day.”

Elvia, who was a second-grade teacher, leaves behind two other children.

Espinoza has been charged with first-degree murder and evidence tampering.

He is being held at Polk County Jail as of 8 April 2024.
