A lift engineer was crushed to death as he tried to free a woman trapped inside.

Antonio Pistone died after getting trapped between the elevator cabin and a floor of the block of flats yesterday (18 Apr).

He’d been called out to the two-storey building to free a woman who had become trapped in the lift.

It suddenly and unexpectedly moved as he carried out the repair work, crushing him, it is understood.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene in Aci Sant’Antonio, south east of Palermo, in Sicily, Italy, and freed Antonio’s body.

Paramedics also arrived on the scene but could only confirm the 31-year-old’s death, as reported on Need To Know.

The firefighters managed to finish Antonio’s work and free the trapped woman, who was unhurt.

She was suffering from emotional shock from being trapped for so long and from learning that Antonio had died.

The paramedics had to take her to hospital for treatment as police officers arrived on the scene to begin investigations.

Representatives from the Italian General Confederation of Labour in nearby Catania said: “The exact dynamics of the event are not known, but one thing is certain.

“It’s unacceptable to lose a life due to a lack of safety conditions that should always be ensured.”

Antonio was much loved in Catania, where he lived and was well known for the parties he organised.

His friend Tracy wrote on social media: “Someone like you wasn’t supposed to leave this world. You were the life of the party, spreading joy wherever you went.

“We shared 10 years of friendship and good times.

“Goodbye, my friend. I will never forget all the times you cheered me up.

“Have a safe journey. You’ll always be in my heart.

“Make the angels dance up there too.”

His pal Luana added: “I can’t believe I won’t receive your nightclub ads anymore, and I’d reply, ‘Jeez, Pistone, you know I’m not coming, what’s the point?’

“And you would reply laughing, ‘I know, but I send them to everyone.’”

Antonio is survived by his parents.
