He collapsed in front of her on the seafront as they walked to their car.
Paramedics spent 50 minutes trying to resuscitate him, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
His wife, who is eight months pregnant, told them that Di Marino had only been dancing in the club in Bellaria, Italy.
That left them confused when they reportedly found marks on his body compatible with violence.
One explanation under consideration is that he may have received blows to the chest and head as he “moshed” on the dancefloor.
Preliminary reports suggest he died from a heart attack.
Di Marino spent his time between Como and Ancona, as reported on Need To Know.
He and his wife lived in the former but were on holiday in Bellaria, near Rimini, when the tragedy happened.
Di Marino taught molecular biology at the Marche Polytechnic University in Ancona and volunteered for the Red Cross in Como.
He had served on the front lines during the Covid-19 pandemic as a volunteer in the ambulance service.
Local media say he was tirelessly dedicated to cancer research.
His death remains under investigation.
