A man went more than 10 years with a 9cm shard of glass embedded in his liver.
The 53-year-old had been experiencing pain and discomfort in a spot under his ribs for over a decade.
After finally seeking medical help, a CT scan revealed a foreign body lodged in the right lobe of his liver.

When questioned about the object, the man was unable to recall how it could have ended up there.
He said he had no history of trauma.
Surgeons at the Kirov Regional Clinical Hospital, in Russia, removed the object in an operation.

The procedure was performed laparoscopically and lasted about two hours, as reported on Need To Know.
One of the team said: “We were amazed when we saw a piece of glass measuring 88x15x7mm with sharp edges on the endoscopic monitor.
“During the operation, it was discovered that the foreign object was covered with a capsule of connective tissue.
“This is how the body responds to the intrusion of a foreign object into tissues.
“It develops aseptic inflammation, and a capsule forms around the foreign object, separating it from healthy tissues.”
The case was revealed by the Kirov Oblast Health Ministry.

The surgeons said the patient was lucky as it could have caused purulent inflammation and an abscess, which would have required emergency surgery.
The operation was delicate because of the liver’s rich blood supply, soft consistency and numerous tube-like structures.
But surgeons managed to extract the glass shard without leaving any deep scars.
