The suspects – a 32-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man – first said they were married and were en route to Lisbon, Portugal, for their honeymoon .
But they soon confessed to carrying capsules full of cocaine in their stomachs on Monday (22 Jul) night.
And they revealed that the final destination was the UK, as reported on Need To Know.
However, they refused to tell the police who had given them the drugs or to whom they were going to deliver them.
The pair were taken from Recife International Airport, Brazil, to a hospital to expel the capsules.
At the hospital, the woman expelled 114 capsules and the man 100.
Each capsule contained just under half an ounce (12 g) of cocaine and the total haul weighed 5 lb and 12 oz (2.6 kg).
Had any of the capsules ruptured in the suspects’ stomachs, they could have died.
The police also seized two mobile phones and cash in pounds, euros, and Brazilian reais from the pair.
Their names have been withheld, but the woman is from Fortaleza and the man from Paragominas.
They were still in hospital at the time of reporting but were due to attend custody hearings once discharged.
They are charged with international drug trafficking and face five to 20 years in prison if convicted.
